Fara (also Farra) is Chhattisgarh's beloved steamed rice dumpling stuffed with spiced lentils. Similar to momos or modak, served in curry or dry with green chutney. Staple across rural Chhattisgarh - Makka Fara (maize) popular during monsoons. Soft texture, mild flavors, perfect comfort food!

Ingredients (Makes 20-25 Fara)

Rice Flour Dough

Rice Flour Dough

2 cups rice flour + warm water + 1 tsp salt

Lentil Filling Filling

Chana Dal Filling

1 cup chana dal (soaked) + onion + ginger garlic + spices

Chutney Side

Green Chutney

Coriander + mint + green chili chutney or curry

Step-by-Step Recipe

Traditional Chhattisgarh method - 1 hour preparation

Prepare Filling

Grind soaked chana dal coarse with ginger-garlic-onion-spices. Make thick paste. Steam or sauté till dry.

Make Dough

Mix rice flour + hot water + salt to soft dough. Knead smooth. Cover rest 15 mins.

Shape & Steam

Pinch lemon-size dough, flatten palm, add filling, seal pouch shape. Steam 10-12 mins in idli steamer.

Serve Hot

Gently remove steamed fara. Serve piping hot with curry or dipped in green chutney!
