Dassam Falls (also known as Paathal Ganga) is a stunning 144-ft (44m) high waterfall located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau in Ranchi district, Jharkhand. Formed by the Subarnarekha River plunging dramatically into a deep gorge, it's one of Eastern India's most picturesque waterfalls. Best visited July-March, surrounded by lush forests and tribal culture.
Dassam Falls, locally called Paathal Ganga ("River of Hell"), is formed by the Subarnarekha River making a 144-ft vertical drop into a dramatic gorge. Located 40km from Ranchi on the Chota Nagpur Plateau, the waterfall creates mesmerizing rainbows in the mist during peak monsoon flow.
Geological Formation: The falls result from geological faulting where hard basalt layers overlay softer sedimentary rock, creating the plunge pool and dramatic drop. Subarnarekha River flows year-round but transforms into a thundering cascade during rains.
Local Legends: Tribal Oraon and Munda communities revere it as sacred. Legend says the river goddess created the falls to escape a demon pursuing her to hell, hence "Paathal Ganga".
Discovery & Development: First documented by British surveyor during 19th century Chota Nagpur surveys. Developed as tourist spot post-independence with steps, railings, and parking. Maintained by Jharkhand Tourism.
Surrounded by Sal forests and tribal villages, offers trekking, picnics, and birdwatching. Nearby attractions include Hundru Falls (25km) and Jonha Falls.
